The host is added to a vCenter Server: A vSphere Distributed Switch is a virtual switch that spans multiple ESXi hosts and enables centralized management of networking configuration across those hosts. To create a VDS, you must have vCenter Server, and the ESXi hosts you want to include in the VDS must be added to vCenter Server.
vSphere Enterprise Plus licensing is required: Creating a VDS requires vSphere Enterprise Plus licensing, which is the highest-level licensing offered by VMware. This license provides advanced features and capabilities, including Distributed Switches. Without the required licensing, you won't be able to create a VDS.
Additional note: While a minimum of two physical uplinks is not a requirement for creating a VDS, it is recommended for optimal performance and redundancy. With two or more uplinks, you can create NIC teams or Link Aggregation Groups (LAGs) to increase bandwidth and provide failover capabilities. Also, logging in to the ESXi Host with the root account is not a requirement for creating a VDS, as the configuration of the distributed switch is done through vCenter Server.
