Achieving Location Tracking: Four Essential Tasks

Location tracking in a wireless network involves identifying the physical location of a wireless device or client. To achieve location tracking, the following four tasks must be completed:

A. Synchronize Cisco WLC or WLCs with Cisco MS: The first task is to synchronize the Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (WLC) or WLCs with the Cisco Mobility Services Engine (MSE). The Cisco WLCs provide wireless network connectivity, while the Cisco MSE provides location tracking services by collecting data from the WLCs.

B. Add Cisco MSE to Cisco WCS: The second task is to add the Cisco MSE to the Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS). The WCS provides a graphical interface for managing the wireless network and displaying the location of wireless clients.

D. Open UDP port 6750 between Cisco WLC and Cisco MS: The third task is to open User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port 6750 between the Cisco WLC and Cisco MSE. This port is used for communication between the two devices and is necessary for location tracking to work.

E. Ensure that APs are placed correctly on maps: The fourth task is to ensure that the Access Points (APs) are placed correctly on the maps in the WCS. This allows the location of the wireless clients to be accurately displayed on the maps.

F. Ensure that the correct antenna type is selected on Cisco WCS: The fifth task is to ensure that the correct antenna type is selected on the Cisco WCS. This is necessary for accurate location tracking as different antenna types have different coverage patterns, which affect the accuracy of location tracking.

In summary, to achieve location tracking in a wireless network, the Cisco WLC or WLCs must be synchronized with the Cisco MS, the Cisco MSE must be added to the Cisco WCS, UDP port 6750 must be opened between the Cisco WLC and Cisco MS, APs must be placed correctly on maps in the WCS, and the correct antenna type must be selected on the Cisco WCS.
