SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a standard protocol used for managing and monitoring network devices. The protocol operates in a client/server model where the management console is the client (Network Management Station, NMS) and the network devices are the servers (agents). The SNMP protocol has three main components, which are:

  1. Management Information Base (MIB): MIB is a hierarchical database that is used by SNMP to store the information about managed devices such as routers, switches, servers, and other network devices. MIB contains a set of object identifiers (OIDs) that represent the variables in the managed device. SNMP retrieves and updates the values of these variables using OID.

  2. Network Management Station (NMS): The Network Management Station (NMS) is the client in SNMP, which is responsible for managing and monitoring the network devices. NMS communicates with the SNMP agents using SNMP messages to retrieve and update the values of the variables in the MIB. NMS collects and stores network data, generates reports, and triggers alarms when network thresholds are exceeded.

  3. SNMP Agent: An SNMP agent is software that runs on the managed network device and communicates with the NMS using SNMP messages. The agent maintains the information about the managed device in the MIB and responds to SNMP messages sent by the NMS. The agent can also send unsolicited messages (traps) to the NMS to inform about any significant events, such as an interface going down or a device overheating.

  4. SET: SET is a command used in SNMP protocol for modifying the value of an object in the managed device. SET is not a separate component but a type of SNMP message that can be sent by the NMS to the agent to change the value of an object in the MIB. SET is used to perform configuration changes on network devices or to change network behavior dynamically.

In summary, SNMP has three main components; the Management Information Base (MIB), the Network Management Station (NMS), and the SNMP Agent. The MIB is a hierarchical database that stores information about managed devices, while the NMS is the client that manages and monitors the network devices. The SNMP agent is software that runs on the managed device and communicates with the NMS using SNMP messages. The SET is a command used in SNMP protocol for modifying the value of an object in the managed device.
